Online Published on 16 August, 2022. Abstract Roots of Aconitum heterophyllum Wall. ex Royle (fam: Ranunculaceae) are reported to exhibit wide range of pharmacological activities. They are rich source of diterpene alkaloids and are known to contain atisine, a low-toxic alkaloid belonging to the category of simpler aconite alkaloids. Due to its medicinal importance, the species is overexploited in the nature and is being reported as critically endangered from the natural habitats. Although various efforts are made to conserve its habitats in wild, the populations of the species is reported to be rapidly declining. This necessitates a detailed understanding of its demands and bottlenecks restraining its conservation and cultivation. The present article summarizes chemical diversity, pharmacological potential, difficulties in cultivation and conservation status of the species.
