Abstract

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) is a popular vegetable grown for its vibrant red calyces all over the world. In India, the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tripura, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Bihar, Telangana, Orissa and Meghalaya grow roselle for its leaves, fiber and calyces in small areas. The crop has many intriguing characteristics as rich antioxidants and is economically significant but there is no specific coding method for observing the plant's growth stages. A clear description of the roselle plant's growth stages will be useful in research, crop management and other crop improvement programs. The present study was planned to cover germination, leaf development, formation of side shoots, stem elongation or shoot development, inflorescence emergence, flowering, development of calyces and seeds and ripening or maturity using the BBCH scale.
