Comparative analysis of Curcuma species essential oil through gas chromatography - mass spectrometry

Abstract

An experiment was conducted to analyze the chemical composition of essential oil from three Curcuma species viz., Curcuma longa, Curcuma caesia and Curcuma aromatica. Fresh rhizomes of three Curcuma species were collected from college orchard, Horticultural College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Coimbatore. Essential oil was collected from the rhizomes through hydro-distillation by using Clevenger-type apparatus. Essential oils were then subjected to Gas Chromatography- Mass Spectrometry analysis. Results revealed the presence of twenty eight compounds in Curcuma longa, thirty five compounds in C. caesia and thirty two compounds in C. aromatica. Interestingly, a total of 20 compounds in C. longa, 16 compounds in C. caesia and 13 compounds in C. aromatica were found specific to the respective species which might be useful as a marker for discrimination of Curcuma species.
