Abstract

Lilium polyphyllum, a critically endangered plant of family Liliaceae, belongs to the Asthbarg Group of medicinal plants. This species has very high ecological and economical importance. Therefore, the study was aimed to investigate the antioxidant activities of L. polyphyllum collected from different populations. The total phenolic and flavonoid contents in bulbs of the L. polyphyllum plants were ranged from 0.88 mgGAE/g fw to 1.02 mgGAE/g fw and 0.36 mgQE/g fw to 0.44 mgQE/g fw in KWLS and MWLS populations of the species, respectively. The antioxidant analysis using methanolic extracts of bulbs of L. polyphyllum was evaluated in terms of DPPH, ABTS and FRAP assays and ranged from 68.9% to 74.2%, 69.1% to 73.3% (%) and 0.52 µgFe(II)/gfw to 1.02 µgFe(II)/g fw in KWLS and MWLS populations, respectively. The IC50 value for bulbs was found 41.73 µg/ml. The study concluded that bulbs of L. polyphyllum can be used as a source of natural antioxidant. There is an urgent need to develop the propagation protocol for mass multiplication and, conservation and full filling the pharmaceutical demands.
