Abstract

Giloe (Tinospora cordifolia (Willd.) Miers.) family: Menispermaceae, is a common component in ayurvedic and traditional medicine. The essence or active component of a plant is referred to as satva or Sara. Traditional knowledge indicates that giloy ‘satva’ has antibacterial, aphrodisiac, immune-stimulant, antioxidant, anticancer, and anti-diabetic properties. The present study was undertaken to identify phyto-chemicals in the ‘satva’ using GC-MS. The findings revealed that the ‘satva’ had 76 metabolites. The medicinally important compounds like n-hexadecanoic acid (14.55%), oleic acid (14.94%), gammasitosterol (11.05%), (E)-5-(1S,5R,8aR)-5-formyl-5,8a-dimethyl-2-methylenedecahydronaphthalen-1-yl)-3-m (5.76%), columbin (4.79%), octadecanoic acid (4.77%), stigmasterol (3.94%) etc, were detected using the GCMS technique in the ‘satva’ of Tinospora cordifolia. In this study, it was observed that ‘satva’ comprises of variety of chemical constituents whose pharmaceutical activities could be used for preparation of medicines in treating various ailments.
