Antimicrobial and antioxidant studies in micropropagated plants of Drymaria cordata

Abstract

The antimicrobial and antioxidant potential of the plant extracts of normal and micropropagated Drymaria cordata were investigated. The solvent extracts of Drymaria were evaluated for their antibacterial activity against five bacterial strains. The extracts showed significant to mild antibacterial activity against Klebsiella pneumoniae, Bacillus cereus, Proteus vulgaris, Salmonella typhi and Staphylococcus aureus. The methanol extract of regenerated whole plants of Drymaria was most effective against all the tested bacterial pathogens. A significant antimicrobial activity of methanol extract was observed against Staphylococcus aureus (10.33±1.15 mm) and Salmonella typhi (10.67±2.00 mm), while moderate activity was recorded on Klebsiella pneumoniae (8.83±1.00 mm) and Proteus vulgaris (8.83±0.76 mm). The methanol extract of Drymaria was found to be highly effective against S. typhi and S. aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 450 μg/ml. DPPH and ABTS assays were performed to determine the antioxidant activity of D. cordata extract. The IC₅₀ values for DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging activity in the micropropagated plants were significantly found to be increased as 67.4 μg/ml and 193.0 μg/ml, respectively. These results affirm the use of Drymaria cordata plant with potent antibacterial and antioxidant potential.
