Abstract

Cultivation of Medicinal and Aromatic Plants (MAPs) is a viable option for sustaining the increasing demand for herbal medicines but also for preventing the genetic erosion of MAPs in natural habitats. The increasing demand is an opportunity to encourage the cultivation of MAPs. Since, agroforestry is one of the most potential ways for the cultivation of MAPs. And there have been sporadic reports on the impact of MAPs cultivated in agroforestry. Thus, our main objectives were to uncover the status of MAPs and their cultivation via. agroforestry systems in India and also to highlight the impact on yield-related attributes and phytochemical properties of MAPs when cultivated in agroforestry systems. Despite the studies so far, there is need to comprehend the variation in the yield and chemical constituent of the MAPs grown under agroforestry. It is often reiterated that institutionalised efforts can upscale MAPs cultivation and thus we have attempted to examine the implication of government and institutional imperatives in MAPs cultivation in India. Finally, we have indicated the way forward for MAPs cultivation under agroforestry.
