Abstract

The ground water resource of India is fast depleting, compared to the earlier rate. Though, it is a replenishable resource, the rate of development is exceeding in many parts of the country, due to various factors where its potential was a dependable one, earlier. It is necessary to monitor this invisible resource for proper understanding and precise planning for its management, so that the resource is sustained for future. The National Hydrology Project (NHP) will facilitate such monitoring, analysis and capacity building of various institutions and water resources professionals for this vital task. Experience over the years and knowledge gained through previous hydrology project shows that there is need to develop well laid out procedures/policies for appropriate coordination amongst various agencies dealing with water within the Central and State Agencies and between Centre and State so that the facility being established through the NHP for centralized data base known as National Water Informatics Centre (NWIC) grows into a robust organization slowly and steadily.
