Abstract

War has existed throughout the history of mankind. Even after countless occasions of peace and conflict, the nature of warfare has continued to evolve. In the last two decades, this process of innovation has given rise to a newer and more complex phenomenon of warfare called ‘hybrid warfare’. Initially, hybrid warfare was used to describe modern combat from the mid-2000s onwards. However, the concept gained momentum only after Russia gained control of Crimea and began its operations in eastern Ukraine in 2014. Expert opinions differ on the Russian version of hybrid warfare; one group of experts believes that Russia’s actions in Ukraine are part of a new warfare strategy, while others are of the view that there is nothing novel in what Russia is doing. Thus, this article attempts to highlight the recent development in hybrid warfare, the Russian version of hybrid warfare, and the strategies adopted during its hybrid warfare in Crimea and Ukraine.
