Variation among Phaeoisariopsis griseola isolates, the incitant of angular leaf spot of French bean

Abstract

Twelve isolates of Phaeoisariopsis griseola (Sacc.) Ferr. were collected and isolated from pod and seeds showing characteristic symptoms of angular leaf spot from three districts of Himachal Pradesh, India. Among different isolates conidia were 1–3 septate and ranged from 30.67 x 3.71 to 39.5 x 6.29 µm in size while, mycelial colour varied from greenish grey to dark grey. A temperature of 25° C, relative humidity levels of 89.9 and 85.7 per cent and a pH level of 6.0 supported the maximum mycelial growth of all isolates in culture. Studies on pathogenic variation on three French bean cvs. Contender (highly susceptible), Jawala (susceptible) and Phagu Chitra (moderately susceptible) suggested highly significant differences in aggressiveness among the isolates.
