Abstract Purpose This paper investigates the usage of social networking sites (SNSs) and the purpose of using SNSs by the central libraries of Indian institutes of technology (IITs) in India Design/Methodology/Approach The survey research method has been adopted for the collection of data. Questionnaire was used as a tool of data collection. One questionnaire was distributed to each respective librarian of the 16 IITs in India Findings Majority (15 i.e.93.75%) of the respondents are male, whereas only 1 (6.25%) is female. In old IITs, majority (3) of respondents are librarians (L), and in new IITs, majority (5) of the respondents are deputy librarian. Two old IITs central libraries are using SNSs, whereas in new, four are using SNSs. Both the central libraries of IITs are using Facebook, YouTube, Blog and Twitter. In all the IITs central library, six(37.50%) are using SNSs for linking with library users, whereas six (37.50%) for creating awareness about library collection and services and also six (37.50%) for getting feedback/sharing problems to the users, whereas four (25%) are using for promotional activities and user education programme Originality/value This study tells the usage and purpose of using SNSs by the central libraries of IITs in India.
