Abstract Purpose The present paper aims to present an overview of library associations and to discuss about their roles in the field of librarianship and highlights the activities performed by the associations in the field. This paper presents a comparative account of quality, range and variety of activities and services of selected library associations, including American Library Association (ALA), Canadian Library Association (CLA), Special Libraries Association (SLA), Association for Information Mangement (ASLIB), Interanational Federartion of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), Indian Library Association, Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) and Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC) in the field of library and information science. Methodology The information is collected through the web portals of these associations and through their publications. The present study intended to display each and every information about the associations in an exhaustive manner. Findings The present study can helps us to find out that the differences among the activities and services of national and international associations. After comparing the associations, we can find out that international associations can perform better jobs in the field of library and information science. The national level associations still playing traditional level activities limited to the nation. This study can also be helpful to explore the new challenges and the solutions of the problems in the field of library and information science to develop their services and to perform best possible activities in the field. Research limitations The present study is limited to find out how the library association serves the people as well as what activities they perform for the library and information science profession and professionals.
