Tanwar Sunder Singh

Information Scientist, Vivekananda Library, M.D. University, Rohtak, Haryana-124001, India

Abstract

It is seen that the preservationists are battling to preserve some analogue media, such as acid papers, thermo fax and other fragile media, for a long time. But, the digital storage media and hardware on which digital contents are stored also need to be preserved because of numerous internal and external forces, such as material instability, improper storage environment, natural disaster, hardware malfunction, sabotage and overuse that can damage or destroy their readability. This paper states about the need for digital preservation with its objectives in library environment. Extended benefits of digitisation over traditional approach are also discussed in the paper.
