Abstract The Indian economy is predominantly a cash-driven economy, but today, an digital payment framework is quickly spreading in our nation. It is to make India "digital". E-payment assists with the development of the economy and making India truly digital. However, in rural India, the penetration of digital payments is very low due to various threats and risk sensitivity of villagers regarding online payments. This paper highlighted the key threats and risk factors pertaining to the rural areas (Mawana, Sardhana, Kithore, Jani, and Kharkhauda) of the Meerut district of western UP. The study employed an exploratory research design in the first phase to explore the various threats and risk sensitivity, and then the empirical study was conducted to highlight the impact and association between these threats and risk sensitivity. Tabulation and ‘Descriptive Statistics’ were used to describe the data and ‘Correlation and Multiple Regression Analysis’ were used for compiling the results (SPSS). The findings of the study revealed that the villagers of Meerut district in Western UPare confident enough in using digital payment systems and making online purchases, but they lack complete awareness regarding the process and procedures of digital payments. However, the young villagers and the literate ones are marginally using the online payments. The study was highly valuable because the penetration of digital payments in India is highly important and the paper was original as it was based on primary data obtained from 100 (valid responses) villagers of Meerut district in Uttar Pradesh.
