Abstract

Effect of inactive α-hexachlorocyclohexane (α-HCH or BHC) on DDT metabolism was studied in DDT resistant Tribolium castaneum (DRS) and compared with piperonyl butoxide (PBO). T. castaneum (DRS) was 1.6 times as succeptible to the combinaiion of DDT and α-BHC as DDT and PBO. Gas liquid chromotographic studies revealed that PBO inhibited dechlorination, bringing down 0.95% (0.0838 μg) initial DDE level in the whole body homogenate to 0.121% but decreased maximum in the case of α-HCH, resulting as low as 0.0109 μg DDE, i.e. 0.09%.
