Abstract

The Uniform Civil Code (UCC) debate in India is not merely a legal issue; it embodies profound socio-cultural, political, and historical dimensions. This research paper offers an extensive exploration of the UCC debate by delving into its nuanced aspects. It investigates the socio-legal implications of the UCC on India’s diverse society, emphasising the secular state’s role, national integration, and gender justice. Furthermore, it discusses the European roots of the UCC concept and scrutinises the intricate web of constitutional provisions and conflicting ideologies. This paper critically assesses the historical context, examines state interventions in personal laws, the evolving stance of the Supreme Court, and the opinions of legal scholars. It concludes by advocating for a balanced approach that respects diversity, promotes gender justice, and upholds constitutional principles.
