Abstract The term Emotional Intelligence was introduced in the scientific literature in 1990. Since then research in this area has increased manifolds, resulting in a vast array of instruments attempting to measure this construct. While some researchers conceived of Emotional Intelligence as a cognitive ability others regard it as representing certain personality traits. The objective of this study is to carry out a comparative analysis of the various Ability and Trait models of Emotional Intelligence, which are widely accepted among the scientific community, based on their theoretical framework as well as their psychometric properties.
