Co-morbid Depression and Health-Related Quality of Life in Diabetes Singh Tara Department of Psychology, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi. E-mail: tarasingh.bu@gmail.com Online published on 27 November, 2018. Abstract Available literature suggests that co-morbid depression significantly impairs quality of life of diabetic people. Present study examined the relationship of co-morbid depression to health related quality of life of diabetic patients using a random sample of 140 patients, who were given measures of Beck Depression Inventory and SF-36, a generic measure of Health Related Quality of Life (HRQoL). One-way ANOVA revealed significant differences between HRQoL of diabetic patients with different levels of severity of co-morbid depression. HRQoL was better among patients with minimal depression than patients with mild and moderate to severe depression. Correlational analyses revealed severity of depression as negatively and significantly related to the HRQoL which was also significantly predicted by the scores on co-morbid depression. Findings are discussed in the light of available research on the relationship of diabetes and co-morbid depression. Need for diagnosis of depression among diabetic patients and its treatment has been emphasized. Top | |
