Abstract When people are faced with life-threatening or other traumatic experiences, they primarily focus on survival and self-protection. They experience a mixture of numbness, withdrawal, confusion, shock, and speechless terror. Some victims try to cope by taking action, while others dissociate. The current study aimed to investigate the ability of emotion regulation of the patients with post traumatic symptoms. Present investigation included 12 trauma affected and 12 normal adult (18 to 40 years) subjects. Sample included both male and female hospitalized cases from various hospitals and Trauma Centres of Varanasi. The intensity level of the traumatic experience was assessed with the PTSD checklist-civilian version. Self control measure of Emotion Regulation Questionnaire was administered on both the groups. As hypothesized the emotion regulation of trauma affected subjects reported significantly low level of cognitive reappraisal (t=<.01) and high level of expressive suppression (t=<.05) than their comparative normal counterparts and partially established the hypothesis.
