Abstract

Background

Urinary tract infection(UTI) is a major public health concernin developing countries. Most UTIs are caused by E.coli, accounting for up to 90% of community acquired UTIs.

Materials and methods

A total of 20 clinical isolates of uropathological E.coli(UPEC) were subjected for antibiotic sensitivity pattern and virulence assay such as hemolysin and gelatinase production.

Results

100% of our isolates were hemolysin producers, whereas none of the isolates were positive for gelatinase production.

Conclusion

Hemolysin might play a crucial role in initiation of UTI in hospitalized individuals. Drug resistance can also be the factor for the treatment failure cases.
