Profile of patients admitted to pediatric intensive care unit, babylon teaching hospital for gynecology and children

Abstract

The purpose of establishing a pediatric intensivecare unit (PICU) is to upgrade the quality of services and obtaining the best results and better outcomes for the severely ill children. This study aimed to analyze the epidemiologic patterns of pediatric critically ill patients presenting to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) and the etiologies of PICU admission of different age groups. This descriptive study onthe total number of children aged less than 15 years who were presentedto the PICU with critical illnesses was conducted in Babylon teaching hospital for gynecology and children`from 2015 to 2016. All patients transferred to the PICU were included without distinction. Demographic data of critically ill children admitted to the PICU were collected and analyzed. Data on etiologies and fate of the PICU admissions were analyzed in various age groups. The Resultsshow there were 484 patients admitted to the PICU. The respiratory, heart, central nervous, infection, renal and surgical diseases were common among PICU patients. The clinical outcome of patients, 220 (54.5%) patients improved were transferred to the pediatric ward, and 264 (45.5%) patients died.

Conclusion

Epidemiologic analysis of the pattern of patients admitted to PICU showed different etiologies for admission; on the top were respiratory system diseases. Neonates were predominate in PICU with poor outcome. Most of patients admitted to PICU stayed for 1-7day. Most of patient stayed for less than one day were died, and patient stayed for more than one month had poor outcome. Winter months showed increase in number of admission to PICU.
