Abstract Background Difficult Airway Breathing in the post anesthesia period is high in obese patients; after surgery, the roles of the nurses in the recovery room are vital in assessing and monitoring the response of these patients to ventilation, and intervene to maintain oxygenation and ventilation. Aim of this study The study aimsto evaluate the nursing intervention about difficulty in airway breathing among obese patients who undergoing postoperative recovery after general anesthesia, and tofind out the relationship between nurses demographic characteristics and their level of intervention. Methodology A descriptive study has been carried out to evaluate nursing intervention for difficult airway breathing among obese patients undergoing postoperative recovery after general anesthesia in Al-Diwaniyah hospitals for the period from September 20th 2016 to July 15th 2017. Non probability (purposive) sample of (50) nurses who work in recovery rooms at four hospitals in Al-Diwaniyah Health Directorate. The sample has been collected by using evaluation instrument which consists of two parts: part I demographical characteristics of the nurse which consist of 9 items. Part II observational checklist for the nurses in the recovery room which consists of 9 domains and 62 items. The instrument has been validated by 20 experts each of them have more than 10 years ’experience in specialty (the mean of experience years is 24.95). The internal consistency of the instrument is determined by person correlated coefficient which was (r = 0.893). The analyzed data have been conducted through application of descriptive statistics (Frequencies, Percentages, Mean of Scores, Standard deviation, and Relative Sufficiency). Also inferential statistics (Analysis of variance ANOVA, Chi squared, and t-test analysis). Results Results of the study shows that 92% of nurses use to wear special nursing uniform, and 84% of them prepare of instruments and equipment, also 82% of them monitored patients, in addition 76% of nurses give care to patient's position, 74% use suctioning technique, 60% of them performs open airway, 56% of nurses implements oxygen mask resuscitation, 52% performs pulse oximeter, while 78% of nurses ’practices never administer medications. Also A significant association between overall evaluations of nurses’ practices in regards to age of the sample, a highly significant association regarding levels of education, years of working in nursing, and years of experience in recovery room. Conclusions The study concluded that many nurses did not follow the procedures and protocols in giving care to the patient during recovery care. Also educational level, years of experience and age have strong impact on quality of nursing care. Recommendations The study recommended engaging recovery room nurses in special training course to improve knowledge and practice regarding difficult airway breathing after general anesthesia, and to include nurses graduated with bachelor degree in providing nursing management in recovery room. Also health directorate should provide poster fixed on recovery room walls including responsibilities and duties of nurses, and providing a special nursing form for documenting of medications administration and nursing notes in patient's chart.
