A study on the relationship between geriatric syndrome factors and quality of life (Community health survey, 2015)

Abstract

Background/Objectives

The study was conducted to provide basic data for the development of elderlyhealth promotion education data in the future through measuring the relationship between causal factors of geriatric syndrome and quality of life through measurement of physical and psychological status of the elderly.

Methods/Statistical analysis

For the study subjects, the results of the Community Health Survey in 2015 were requested by the Disease Control Headquarters for raw data, and 787 people aged 65 or older in one city were analyzed. Statistical software R program was used to analyze the data of this study. Two sample (independent) ttest and ANOVA test were used to verify the difference of mean of the quality of life in two groups by general characteristic, health status, and chronic disease of the research subjects. Scheffe test was used for post hoc test. Multiple regression analysis was used to determine the effect of the causal factors of geriatric syndrome on quality of life.

Findings

Accordingly to the results of decision tree analysis on their effect on quality of life, the scores was higher in the age group of 70 years or younger with no hypertension, among the main geriatric syndrome, and chewing difficulty.

Improvements/Applications

To develop a successful health program that helps relieve multiple symptoms of geriatric syndrome for those males at the age of 70 or younger, the findings can be useful educational data for a successful program for enhancing the elderly's health in designing for chronic illness management and a link program oral health management.
