Abstract

The use of herbal remedies for searching of new medical entities has been increased extremely and becoming popular in the developing countries in recent years. In fact the diversity of the naturally occurring compounds shared with their formation within the bio systems make them much more acceptable with fewer side effects than that of totally synthetic chemical entities for the treatment of various chronic diseases such as cancer. Thus, in the present study the methanolic extracts of the two plants; Anthemis bornmuelleri L. and Amygdalis communis L. aerial parts were evaluated for their cytotoxic effect against six different human cancer cell lines (A375.S2, T47d, PANC-1, Du 145, K562, PC3) using MTT assay. The results indicated that Amygdalis communis extract, significantly inhibited the proliferation of two cell lines K562 and A375. On the other hand, the extract of Anthemis bornmuelleri exhibited a significant antiproliferative activity against T47d cell line only. However both plants did not show any cytotoxicity against PANC-1, PC-3 and Du 145 cell lines. In vitro evaluation of the cytotoxic activity of the plants extracts used in this work confirmed their potential use as new antineoplastic agents for the treatment of different types of cancer. Also determination and separation of the active compounds that could be responsible for the recognized biological activities of the evaluated extracts are needed in future.
