Abstract

Aim and Objective

To do a review study on the level of cortisol in saliva of diabetic patients as an estimate of the stress levels and associated adrenal stress index.

Background

Cortisol is a steroid hormone in the glucocorticoid class of hormones, and is produced in humans by the Zona fasiculata of the adrenal cortex within the adrenal gland. It is released in response to stress and low blood glucose concentration. It functions to increase blood sugar through gluconeogenesis to suppress the immune system and to aid in the metabolism of fat, protein and carbohydrates and also decreases bone formation. Chronic hypoglycemia can impair normal adrenal function by repetitive overstimulation of cortisol production. Recurring exposure to high cortisol will impair insulin activity, and invariably lead to insulin resistance and beta-cell exhaustion. The ASI panel investigates the insulincortisol relationship under real-life conditions to allow targeted and meaningful interventions. This panel is useful in the following clinical situations: rapid weight gain and obesity, deranged blood lipids, sugar blues, early diabetes and associated emotional disturbances.

Reason

Awareness about the actual cause of the diabetes remains unknown. This review study aims at creating awareness among the people.
