Detection of Fimh Gene for Fimbrial Mediated Adhesion Antigen in Clinical isolates of Escherichia coli

Abstract

Uropathogenic E. coli (UPEC) strains known to have a wide variety of virulence factors, including pili or fimbriae, which mediate attachment to uroepithelial and vaginal cells, resistance to human serum bactericidal activity, haemolysin production, and increased amounts of K capsular antigen. The adherence of E. coli to host is usually mediated by adhesions to host cell receptors. UPEC strains produce different types of adhesins, including type 1 fimbriae, which are essential for recognition and attachment to urinary epithelium. In this study we have taken 20 clinical isolates of E. coli and detected for antibiotic susceptibility pattern followed by the presence of fimH gene by PCR. We found 85% of our isolates were positive for this gene this indicates the association of the presence of this gene with adherence to various surfaces.
