Abstract

Aim

To review the deminerlisation around orthodontic brackets.

Objective

To know the deminerlisation around orthodontic brackets

Background

Enamel demineralization adjacent to orthodontic brackets is one of the risks associated with orthodontic treatment. Glass ionomer cements have been shown to decrease enamel demineralization adjacent to brackets and bands but do not exhibit bond strengths comparable to resin composites. The opaque white appearance of the enamel lesion is due to subsurface demineralization with an increase in porosity and consequential changes in the optical properties of the enamel. It also be direct erosion of the surface. Reports of these “white spot lesions” have been made by several investigators and have been documented as early as one month after the start of treatment. Meticulous oral hygiene maintenance, fluoride rinses, and topical fluoride applications have been recommended to prevent or revert this.

Reason

Demineralization during orthodontic treatment is a significant clinical problem. Hence this review aims at creating awareness about methods of decreasing demineralisation during ortho treatment.
