Abstract

The importance of education was realized for human resource development vis-à-vis the economic growth and prosperity of the country. Since independence, numerous efforts have been made to provide education to the future citizens of the country. The National Policy on Education (NPE) 1986 and Programme of Action (PoA) 1992 thereof stands as a major landmark in the country's journey towards Universal Elementary Education (UEE). Much before the enforcement of RTE Act 2009, India initiated a wide range of programmes for achieving the goal of UEE. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA), a holistic programme towards promoting elementary education subsuming the forgoing initiatives, was launched by the government of India in 2001. The present study highlights the achievements of Universalisation of Elementary Education for all children by one of the remarkable initiatives called Sarva Shiksha Abhiyaan (SSA). In this paper the strategies, challenges before the government are discussed and some suggestions are given for the effective implementation of SSA to achieve the set targets in the set time.
