Analyses of the banking concept of education

Abstract

The present paper analyses the revolutionary work of Brazialian educator Paulo Freire “Pedagogy of the Oppressed”. The research scholar has taken up second chapter “The Banking Concept of Education” from the original book and has analyzed the various sub concepts given by Paulo Freire. Paulo Freire has rightly called the then education system dehumanizing which has the characteristic of narrative sickness, as it has jammed teacher's as well as student's mind, here student is a patient listener, ready to accept everything unquestionably, such an education is worthless and reasonless. Teachers lack critical abilities thus their methodologies are also hallow, which is reducing students to mere machines and containers. Paulo Freire also takes a dig at the wrong pre-conceived notion that students know nothing. This is the mindset of oppressors. Paulo Freire has rightly suggested the solution of all the problems, i.e. Reconciliation hence learning will take place only when teacher and students both are on the same side. Teacher needs to be a guide, friend, philosopher mentor and facilitator, whom students can always challenge, question, enquire, contradict and ask how and why about the content. So any party can possess the knowledge and teach. Freire further says that Banking concept of Education has been fatal as it doesn't make the man a conscious being. We have been attacked by one more problem in our education system i.e. lack of communication between teacher and the taught, but here we need to understand that communication is the need of the hour. As Freire rightly said we should not be Necrophily (in favour of banking concept of Education) rather we must be Biophily (against banking concept of education). Only the liberated (free) form of education can make both teacher and the taught stand on the same side and students could become active and critical co-investigators who can indulge in a healthy and critical dialogue with their teacher. The education which will lead towards such stage is as (as opposed to banking concept of education) Problem-Posing Education which will be revolutionary in nature.
