Commercial banks: Rural branch expansion programmes in India Annadurai A.R. Dr.1 1Assistant Professor, Department of Commerce, Alagappa University Evening College, Tamil Nadu, India Online published on 20 March, 2021. Abstract Creature a developing economy, the main object of the Government of India is to remove regional disparities and thereby to improve the productivity of the economy. A strong base of institutional finance is a must to improve the productivity levels in various economic activities. As commercial Banks form the major source of institutional finance, they have to fulfill the legitimate credit needs of the people in rural and semi-urban areas especially that of the underprivileged. The accomplishment of this task necessitates the presence of banks in these areas. No facility financial or otherwise can be utilized until it is in the form which can be used at a place where and at a time when it is needed and is availed by those who need it most. Therefore, the physical spread of bank offices is a pre-requisite to ensure rapid economic development. In this paper, the progress attained by commercial banks in expanding their branch network in rural centres is analyzed under four heads such as share of rural branches of commercial banks in India, bank group wise share of rural branches of commercial banks, bank groupwise market share of rural branches of commercial banks, population per branch and rural branch of commercial banks. Top Keywords RBI, Commercial Banks, Rural population and Branch Expansion. Top | | |
