Abstract

The Talk begins with explaining the meaning and the purpose of observational approach in tunnelling. The necessity and evolution of NATM technology has been brought out and the role of observational approach in NATM instrumentation described in detail.

The author deplores the tendency of looking at instrumentation as a formality to complete contractual obligation of the civil contractor without and not making any use of the enormous data produced by the instruments. Instruments are purchased and installed at a substantial cost but sadly the data given out by them is not considered important and utilized properly.

The user must use today’s digital technologies and a suitable Software for converting instrumentation data into useful information well in time in a form that enables him to take proper decisions. He must analyse the data and take timely corrective actions to ensure smooth, safe, efficient, and economic construction. Only then he can derive best benefits from NATM technology.

The Speaker has some actual evaluation reports from a Monitoring Software to illustrate the power of the-digital technology.
