Abstract

Two inclined pressure tunnels of Parbati-II Hydroelectric project excavated by Tunnel boring machine (TBM), it is a 1546 m long twin tunnels with a finished diameter of 3.5 m each and has an inclination of 30° to the horizontal. The TBM was capable to for not only excavating through rock at steeper inclinations but also mechanically installs the tunnel lining of hexagonal shaped pre-cast concrete segments. Mitsubishi designed the TBM specifically to work in an inclined tunnel. Construction of this prestigious twin inclined pressure shafts was unique for which precise and meticulous planning was done in advance at tender stage itself and contractor has trained its manpower in Switzerland and Austria for getting the desired results. Selection of Jager and Sali for the job and bringing them to work in India for the first time paved the way of successful completion of the job. This paper describes the case study of construction of twin tunnels, summarizing the experiences and challenges of working with this advance technology with meticulous planning and effective safety measures.
