[178]Factor analysis in interpretation of Ganga river water quality
Chaudhary R. 2001Factor analysis was carried out by using physicochemical analysis data of Ganga river of North India between Narora to Kannauj which is the middle reach of river Ganga, for a period of three years with the following objectives: (1) to classify the study reach of Ganga river in to the mineralized and non-mineralized zones; (2) to find out the dominating variables at different locations; and (3) to evaluate the sampling network and frequency. Besides the above objectives, the factor analysis is also expected to yield the correlation between the variables. The paper examines the results of computer based factor analysis performed on 20 physico chemical variables of water quality obtained from periodic monitoring of river Ganga at four stations between Narora to Kannauj for a period of three years. The results from factor analysis (R-mode) indicate that Ganga river is mineralized between Fatehgarh to Kannauj, which is the lower reach, and non-mineralized between Narora to Katchla, which is the upper reach of the study area. It also summarizes that the major pollutant source for the river is anthropogenic activity at Narora and Katchla, whereas at Fategarh and Kannauj it is domestic and industrial waste. The significant season with respect to variation of mineral parameters were common in all the four seasons indicating the validity of seasonal frequency of monitoring of river Ganga.

[179]Assessment of environmental parameters on ground water quality
Gyananath G, Islam SR, and Shewdikar SV. 2001This paper presents a case study on the influence of environmental parameters on groundwater quality in Nanded, Maharashtra. Ground water samples from different sampling stations of Nanded were analysed for various water duality parameters during summer, winter and rainy seasons. The study revealed significant changes of water duality during different seasons of the year. Seasonal variations of TDS in ground water was studied and observed. Results show that TDS levels (1000 mg/litre) during pre-monsoon season dropped to 600 mg/litre of TDS during rainy season. In the present study, TDS increased during summer season and it showed a decrease during rainy season. The pronounced alterations of TDS in ground water samples during different seasons indicated the general nature of water quality. A comparison of the present findings with drinking water standards for TDS and classification of TDS for drinking water revealed that the values are within threshold limits and therefore good for drinking purpose. However, the possible effects of hardness causing disease needs further investigation. Thus, it can be concluded on the basis of the study, that physi-cochemical characteristics of the water samples influenced seasonal variations.
