Mental Health Problems among Hemodialysis Patients in India

Abstract

Depression, stress and anxiety are the most prevalent psychological disorders among end-stage renal disease patients undergoing hemodialysis.The aim of this review is to better understand the research findings related to mental health problems among hemodialysis patients.Researchers used the following databases for literature search such as PubMed and Google Scholar. Results revealed that the prevalence of depression, anxiety and stress among hemodialysis patient ranges from 29% to 69%,13.68% to 71% and 13.68%respectively in India.Lower income group patients, more advanced stage of CKD and duration of hemodialysis (more than 3 years) had higher prevalence of depression and anxiety.This review article concluded that clinicians should focus on psychiatric morbidities while managing hemodialysis patients and provide holistic treatment using multidisciplinary approaches to improve the overall quality of life.
