Air pollution and health: a case study of lucknow (Capital of Uttar Pradesh, India)

Abstract

Man has traveled long path of civilization where he made many efforts for cozy living. He made big and small dams, technological developments including factories, vehicles etc which caused air pollution and ultimately led to many health problems. High the level of exposure to damaging chemicals and the period of time of the exposure play an important part in the extent of damage caused to the individual. Air pollution affects our health in many ways with both short-term and long-term effects. The extent to which an individual is harmed by air pollution usually depends on the total exposure to the damaging chemicals, i.e., the duration of exposure and the concentration of the chemicals must be taken into account. Present study has been done in Lucknow, the State capital of Uttar Pradesh where fast growing urbanization is adversely affecting the health of its people. In this paper an attempt has been made to examine the correlation between air pollution and health among Lucknowites. It is an exploratory work where 300 people of both sex above 18 years of age have been taken on the basis of random sampling. Present work was done during 15 May 2009 to 14 June 2009. This Study shows that air pollution is causing both short and long term effects to the people of Lucknow. Present study shows that continual exposure to air pollution affects the lungs of growing children and aggravates or complicates medical conditions in the elderly.
