Abstract

The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), which causes the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), has evolved into a pandemic that militates against public health on a global scale. With no vaccine in sight for immunization against the AIDS-transmitting virus, HIV, the only feasible method of controlling the spread of the disease seems to be through behavioral prevention. The focus of the interventions are specifically High Risk Groups which include injecting drug users (IDUs), sex workers and men who have sex with men (MSM) and now the migrant population. The incidence and spread of HIV/AIDS are disproportionately high among groups who already suffer from a lack of human rights protection, and experience discrimination. This includes groups that have been marginalized socially, culturally and economically. Women are identified are one of the most marginalized and disadvantaged group which suffers and is highly vulnerable to various forms of exploitation and injustice. It is well known that the AIDS epidemic is fuelled by human rights abuses. In particular, different forms of marginalization and stigma stop people accessing the information, support and services that would help to protect them from HIV/AIDS. This is one of the aspects of gross violation of health rights. They can also put people in situations that make them more vulnerable to HIV/AIDS. Women being marginalized and already suffering from the dual and discriminatory social status have been affected and denied mostly of their rights. Thus the paper is an attempt to throw some light on the various forms of violation of rights with respect to HIV/AIDS specifically to the additional burden of the being a female gender.
