Abstract

Role of Corporates in Women Empowerment through CSR initiatives. The corporates have long since come to realize that paying attention to CSR in a truly responsible manner is necessary for the businesses for creating positive image in the society and even survival. The idea of empowerment is broadbased and calls for concerted efforts on the part of industry, government and civil society to combat the challenges. In order to address the attempts towards Empowerment of Women, this paper contributes to the ongoing debate —that is corporate social responsibility initiatives—and explores how companies have incorporated the paradigm of empowerment into their CSR initiatives. Highlighting various activities through CSR initiatives to achieve the objective of Community and social development, this paper establishes the need of CSR for the Women Empowerment and social development. Government of India has various projects on its priority list for women empowerment and community development like Swarnjayanti Gram Svrojgar yojna (SGSY), Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MNNREGS) etc. which are being implemented as per government policies. There are still many critical gaps which need to be filled as far as the development and empowerment of marginalised groups are concerned. This paper gives a brief insight into the concept of CSR and Women Empowerment further exploring the relationship between CSR and women empowerment. It examines with the help of secondary data various initiatives taken up by the corporates for empowerment of women.
