Abstract

Subordination of women in the Indian Society has been a glaring reality since time immemorial. The greatest challenge while addressing Violence against women, many a times is that, in most of the cases, the victims themselves are more often than not, unaware of being victimized as they are ingrained in such a manner that they willingly accept the violence as part of their ‘kismat’ (fate). Only when the Violence becomes unbearable or leads to dire consequences as death etc. do people muster the courage to come out and report the matter. Violence faced by Women begins right from their conception. Multiple issues, inter twined among themselves have created strong shackles for the women in South Asia and India in particular. The very birth of a woman in our society lies in jeopardy. Her entire life from the cradle to the grave passes away in oblivion. The importance of a male child in our culture has led to gender differential treatment in education, nutrition, health and other opportunities. A boy's role in death rituals, inheritance, lineage and dependency in old age has made a male child desirable as a consequence it has resulted in female feticide and infanticide, dowry and its evils, domestic violence, rape and other forms of violence against women. This paper tries to bring forth the major forms of Violence that the women in Indian Society face today; it goes onto show how they are a result of the culture we live in, highlighting the importance of a male child in our culture and the vices of the preferential treatment and status meted out to him by his family and society. It also shows how the different types of violence cannot be tackled in isolation as they are all interconnected due to the rigid traditions, social systems and institutions prevalent in our society.
