Insecticidal Activity of Ethanolic Extracts of Ocimum sanctum and Madhuca indica against Mustard Aphid Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) (Homoptera: Aphididae) Rani Manju, Sharma Sunita Pest and Parasite Research Laboratory, P.G. Department of Zoology, Bareilly College, Bareilly. Abstract Insecticidal activity of the ethanolic extract of seeds of Ocimum sanctum and leaves ofMadhuca indica was determined against mustard aphid Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.), a key pest of Brassica oil seeds and vegetables. The shade dried crushed seeds of Ocimum sanctum and the shade dried leaves of Madhuca indica were extracted with ethanol by soxhlet glass extractor to get the aphidicidal principals, the residue thus obtained was diluted with glass distilled water to prepare the required concentrations (2, 3 and 4%) of the extract. The test solutions were sprayed separately on the potted plants infested with counted number of third instar nymphs and adults of apterous viviparous females. Both the extract were found to be effective aginst mustard aphid. Seed extract of Ocimum sanctum caused complete motality after a maximum period of 48 hrs. at 4% concentration. The leaf extract of Madhuca indica causes 100% motality at a concentration of 4% after 96 hrs. O. sanctum seed extract was found to be most effective thanM. indicaleaves extract. The lower concentrations viz. 2.0 and 3.0% were also effective but required more time to cause complete mortality. The present study, therefore indicated the ethanolic usefulness ofO. sanctum and M. indica extracts in the management of L. erysimi population.
