Patho-Physiology and relation of A-B-O Blood Groups in Tuberculotic Population

Abstract

The incidence of tuberculosis coincide with rapid industrialization and consequent urbanisation. A voluminous literature has grown throughout the world regarding the association of many diseases with blood group systems. In the present study an effort is made into the relationship of A-B-O blood groups with sex and age distribution in 710 tuberculotic patients treated in the Clara Swain Hospital, Bareilly District (U.P.) India. The diagnosis of tuberculosis was done by radiological finding that depends on posterior and anterior view of Chest X-Ray, sputum and culture test for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis for Acid Fast bacilli by Ziehl Neelsen method. Distribution of blood groups among 408 (57.467%) male tuberculotic patients was as ‘O’ 35%>’B’ 30% > ‘A’ 29% > ‘AB’ 6%. Females having this infections were 302 (42.53%) and it was distributed as ‘A’ 36% > ‘O’ 33% > ‘B’ 26% > ‘AB’ 5%. Out of 710 cases, 603 (84%) were of granulomatous lymphatitis of which 411 (57.88%) were smear positive and AFB, 299 (42.11%) were both smear and culture positive, 112 (15.77%) cases were smear positive and culture negative where as 2 (0.28%) cases were smear negative and culture positive. All but one culture positive mycobacterium were Mycobacterium tuberculosis confirmed by colony character.
