Abstract

The IMR for India was estimated to be 58/1,000 live births in 2006, through this marks disparities between rural and urban areas (64 and 40, respectively); between boys and girls (56 and 61, respectively); and states (ranging from 76 in Madhya Pradesh to 14 in Kerala). Malnutrition is directly or indirectly associated with more than half of all young child mortality. Studies show that 13 per cent of under-five mortality globally, and an estimated 16 per cent in India, could be prevented by the universal practice of exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of life. If people understood how affordable and feasible it is to prevent children dying, they'd be shocked. There is no real pressure for action largely because of lack of awareness of the scale of the problem. An overwhelming 92 per cent of those surveyed felt that that it was feasible for India to achieve its Millennium Development Goals (MDG) target of reducing child mortality. India's child mortality rate decreased from 94 per 1,000 births in 2000 to 69 in 2008. The country's target for 2015 is 38. According to experts, child mortality is a sensitive indicator of a country's development and it could be reduced by up to 70 per cent if low-cost interventions are provided universally.
