Abstract

The basic essential for sustenance of life are food and any addition of a baser substance to the food stuffs for financial gain or any negligence and lack or laxity in hygienic conditions of processing, storing etc ultimately causes the consumer financial loss or even makes him prey to diseases. The present study was carried out to id entify buying practices of respond ents and their extent of awareness related to selected food products. Stratified sampling method with questionnaire cum interview schedule was adopted to collect data. Study revealed that respondent's awareness related to rights and responsibilities was good but poor related to food adulteration. Education, family income and occupation had an effect on extent of awareness. This deliberate or non deliberate debasing or toxifying of food stuffs by manufacturers or suppliers driven by greed or lust can only curbed by an ever vigilant or an ever alert consumer or an honest bureaucracy all mentally dedicated to one single cause.
