Abstract

In human society individuals normally do not have an absolute freedom for the choice of mate. Some norms and restriction are imposed in each society, which plays a decisive role for the selection of mate and thereby puts a check on mating at random. In the tradition bound stratified society like that of India caste system is a living reality. The caste is divided into endogamous groups. These endogamous groups vary in their gene frequencies even through they share the same econiche. Principles of Endogamy regulate their gene pool. In Uttar Pradesh like other parts of India there are several endogramousgroups of Brahmins among these Brahmins mating pattern is generally regulated by caste endogamy with in a network of clan or gotra exogamy Darlinton (1943) referred this type of mating pattern as “Combination of inbreeding and out breeding in parallel”. The objective of present study is to investigate and understandmating Structure of the Five-Endogamous Groups of Uttar Pradesh Brahmins. The study applies both primary and secondary sources of data.
