Abstract

The philosophical discussion of man's subjectivity is a comprehensive contribution of Karol Wojtyla towards a wholistic understanding of the human person. Building upon the classical metaphysics of both Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas and influenced by Scheler's phenomenology he was able to provide a balance between the objective and subjective elements of the human person uncovering further the inner dimension that envelops the mystery about man. It is about this inner dimension of the human person particularly the aspect of consciousness that this paper is about. Consciousness from Wojtyla's point of view appears to be significant for it provides the reasons why the human person cannot be understood as simply a suppositum of rational nature, but instead a subject that is unique and unrepeatable in a world of many individuals. The paper has three parts. First, it discusses Wojtyla's approach in understanding the human person. Second, the author identifies Wojtyla's approach in understanding consciousness as an integral dimension of the human person. Finally, the author identifies the role of consciousness in relation to man's action towards self-determination.
