Prevalence of Obesity among North Delhi Children

Abstract

The objective of the present study the prevalence of childhood and adolescent obesity in North Delhi. A cross sectional study was designed in which data relating to anthropometry were collected. A data of 500 children and adolescents (6-15years) have been collected cross-sectionally from North Delhi Public Schools in an Indian Council Medical Research funded study. Body Mass Index is a height weight system of measurement that applies to both the sexes has been used to assess obesity. A high prevalence of obesity is seen at ages 8 and 9 years (20%), 13 years(32%) among males whereas in females, the prevalence of obesity is high at ages 6, 7, 10 and 13years(12%). So, this problem needs to be addressed urgently by making corrections in the diet. The conclusion of the study shows the increasing prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents. Diet modification is the only solution to this problem.
