Abstract The fingerprint study is a very significant method for personal identification and estimate of difference among population groups. It studies the patterns and carving on the fingers which can vary among males and females and one population to another. The finger-ball prints of 30 males and 30 females were collected. The aims were to determine the frequency distribution and predominant finger-ball pattern; to find out a variation between males and females; and to find out variation between different populations on the basis of dermatoglyphic indices. The frequency distribution is found to be in order: Loops>Whorls>Arches. No significant gender difference was observed between males and females in terms of finger-ball patterns. The Gender difference cannot be estimated through finger-ball pattern in the studied population. Highly significant (p<0.00001) difference on the basis of various dermatoglyphics pattern indices is observed among different populations of the same geographical location (western India).
