Abstract Consanguinity is a very old and common pattern of marriage practiced in various parts of the world. This study focuses on one of such communities called Budaga Jangam in Andhra Pradesh which has been traditionally following consanguinity. The impact of consanguinity, socioeconomic status and literacy level on the physical and mental health conditions of the individuals have been analyzed. 200 households belonging to Musunuru, Vissannapeta, Agiripalli and Nuzvid Mandals in Krishna District of Andhra Pradesh have been interviewed personally regarding their marriage patterns, socio-economic status, education and occupation and conclusions have been drawn on the occurrence of any inherited physical and mental health conditions.
