Abstract In the past two decades ICT (information and communication technology) has completely transformed the library and information science in India and paved the way for the establishment of the digital libraries. The present article attempts to define the concept of digital library and elaborates the functions, opportunities and challenges faced by the digital libraries. In addition to the several issues involved in the process of digitization of the information resources, also discusses the digital library initiatives in India taken by both private and government agencies.
