Emerging technologies -turbo generators for strategic applications Roy K K, Deep Upendra, Panda K C, Prasad M N V Surya, Yadavaraju CH Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited Online published on 18 September, 2018. Abstract Generator is the heart of power system, which pumps the electricity in the network. Continual upgradation of the generator designs, manufacturing processes, operation and maintenance procedures is an important aspect to meet the industry requirements. The history of generator design, technology and development has been a long and varied one. The designs have evolved from slow speed vertical shaft to high-speed horizontal shaft air-cooled units, through indirect hydrogen cooled units to total water-cooled units. The design of modern generators, whether they are air-cooled, hydrogen-cooled, hydrogen & water-cooled, air & water-cooled, total water cooled requires a blend of time-proven, as well as innovative design concepts with modern technology to provide efficient, trouble free service. For strategic applications, Generators have to comply with special requirements like compact size, low noise, compliant to EMI/EMC et cetera. Designs are analyzed, verified for compliance to the special requirements and then finalized. With the advent of the latest 3D modeling softwares like NX, Solid works and FEM based analysis softwares like Ansys, Maxwell, Magnet, J-mag et.., the design are made, analyzed and the results can be obtained with in a short span of time. Based on the analysis results, the designs are modified and optimized.
