Abstract

For last few years, countries across the globe are struggling to mitigate their carbon emission. Earlier, the Kyoto Protocol and now “The Paris Accord” on which 194 countries & European Union have signed, of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCC) is a vouch of the global commitment for reduction in carbon emission. This concern has changed the entire energy market spectrum world over and India is not unaffected by this. The energy sector is now more inclined towards renewable resources in place of fossil fuels. This has resulted in the increased share of renewable energy resources in the electricity grid specially the wind & the solar energy. But at the same time, the integration of wind & solar power into the grid has posed a serious challenge due to their variability. Therefore, Pumped Storage Plants (PSPs) have emerged as a prominent source of clean energy for maintaining the grid stability. This paper discusses the importance of PSPs in such changing environment.
